Access to Land and Forced Evictions: Experiences of Resettlement From Latin America to Asia

Recent trends across Guatemala, Ecuador, and the Philippines show an alarming rise in forced evictions linked to business operations—agribusiness, extractive industries, and large-scale development projects. Rural and Indigenous communities increasingly face displacement, criminalization, and resettlement processes that fail to meet international human rights standards.

Following his official country missions and global consultations, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, recently presented his report to the Human Rights Council, including the new Guiding Principles on Resettlement. They aim to ensure that any resettlement process upholds dignity, participation, and non-discrimination.

This panel brings together three land defenders who directly experience the impacts of business-related evictions and resettlement as well as the Special Rapporteur to discuss about his report and expertise.

  • Balakrishnan Rajagopal, UN Special Rapporteur for the Right of Housing
  • Sandra Calel, Unión Verapazense de Organizaciones Campesinas, Guatemala
  • Raquel Silva, Red de Mujeres Rurales, Ecuador
  • Rachel Tahay, Inged Fintaylan, Philippines
